Product Marketing

How to avoid falling for marketing traps?

Marketing tries to persuade you that if you buy their product, you will become happier, healthier, more productive, more charming, more handsome/beautiful, or more successful. Suddenly paying a certain amount of money will bring you something that you have always wanted but could not get till this moment that you have found this product, service, or seminar.

Let’s consider this practical example. You see a very elegant smartwatch and watch its ad with this very successful businessman or daring athlete, both with miraculous performance. How so? Well, this smartwatch can do a few tricks, such as measuring your heartbeat rate and, more notably, issuing redundant notifications from your smartphone. Suddenly, your life will be organized, and your sports performance will hit a new peak. The question is, do you want to believe this message? It is your choice; after all, it is your money that you are using to choose.

In general, buying a new item won’t improve our lives unless it fills a real need. If you have a very decent smartphone, there is nothing to be gained from getting a newer one. If you have one proper smart band that you can use regularly, there is no value in getting the latest smartwatch.

So always ask yourself, what need am I filling if I buy this item? And is this need a real need or a false one?
